Agnes – 10 years old

Agnes is 10 years old and has cerebral palsy. She was brought to Home of Hope by an organization called Footstep Uganda. She was rescued by an older man, who found her being mistreated by a young lady. When the lady saw the man, she fled. Agnes was brought to police and it was one of the officers who named her Agnes and referred her to Footstep Uganda. Since Footstep Uganda does not have the facilities to take care of disabled children, they asked Home of Hope to admit her. When Agnes came to Home of Hope, she looked frail and was malnourished. She was immediately enrolled in our nutrition program and therapy services. She responded well and right now she looks healthy, is able to sit, use her legs to play, is able to feed herself with minimal help and is very mobile.

Brenda – 15 years old

Brenda is 15-years old and has Downs syndrome. She lost her mother when she was just 2 years old. She was left to live with her grandmother until she was 13, when her grandmother died in a road accident. After the burial of her grandmother, none of her relatives were willing to take care of her, because of her disability. For two months she lived alone, and she could only get food from neighbors nearby. But there were also days she could be without food, which resulted in malnutrition. She was rescued by the Child and Family Protection Unit of the police who referred her to the probation officer. Later, Home of Hope was contacted and requested to take in Brenda. Because she was frail and malnourished, she was immediately enrolled in our nutrition program and therapy services. She responded well and is now healthy, able to communicate verbally, can dress herself, use the bathroom and recognize all the people of the home.

Bahati – 4 years old

Bahati is 4 years old and was born with spinal bifida. He was abandoned at the home of a local probation officer. The officer learned that his father abandoned the mother after realizing that she gave birth to a child with a rare disability. Police tried to trace the mother in vain, but she has not been found. Bahati was referred to Home of Hope for his care. He was just 6 months when he came with club feet which were corrected by the orthotics and work with the therapists at Home of Hope. Bahati has been able to get exercise on a daily basis which has enabled him to stand with support, walk with the help of a walker, learn how to speak, and now goes to school.
